Note

The following email is via Geni.com, after I discovered the name Myra Storm on his marriage certificate as a witness. Myra seems to have had 6 children between 1923 & 1936 with Stanley Desborough, so it seems odd that she signed as 'Storm' in 1950.

Dear Michael,

My name is Martin Watson from SW London. I recently obtained a copy of my parents' marriage certificate. Their names were Harry Watson (died 2005) and Joyce Young (died 1993), both of Hartlepool. They married in Stranton Church in 1950.

Myra Storm witnessed my parents' marriage in 1950. I am just curious about who she was and how she came to be their witness, along with one Andrew Knox, and my mother's father. I'd be really grateful to hear anything you can tell me.

My father, Harry, was born to May Watson in 1928, but was raised by his grandparents, (James Sedcole Watson and Kate Loughborough), as their own. He didn't discover this until 1983. We always thought that May was his big sister.

I am contacting you about this profile: https://www.geni.com/people/Myra-Storm/6000000045743594299

Sincerely,

Martin Harry Watson

National Service in peacetime
It came into force in January 1949 and meant that all physically fit males between the ages of 17 and 21 had to serve in one of the armed forces for an 18-month period.

Basic pay for a private soldier was 28 shillings (£1.40) a week in 1948. This compared poorly with the average weekly wage in 1951, which was eight pounds, eight shillings and six pence.

In October 1950, in response to the British involvement in the Korean War, the service period was extended to two years.

In 1948, the British post-war government realised the need for an armed forces larger than that which voluntary recruitment could provide. Discussions were soon started in parliament on a new National Service Act with a first such act being approved in July 1947.[1] This first version was to come into force on 1 January 1949 and established the period of National Service to 12 months. However, financial crises, the advent of the Cold War and the Malayan Emergency caused the act to be amended before coming into force. The amendment was approved in December 1948, with the date in which it would come into force still being 1 January 1949.
