5 overcome by escaping Gas - One dead in hotel at Middlesbrough - From our correspondent Middlesbrough Monday

A man was found dead and four other people were taken to hospital today following an escape of gas at a Middlesbrough Commercial Hotel.

A short circuit in an electric wire running close to a gas pipe beneath the stairs, which could have caused three holes found in the pipe, is thought to have been responsible.

William Henry Roberts 50, a commercial traveller, who was also concerned with the management of the hotel, the Hazeldene Commercial Hotel, Borough Road, was found dead on the floor of his bedroom.

Those taken to the North Ormesby hospital are

Alice may Hunter 18 a maid of Stanley Street Middlesbrough, Richard Eric Goldstone 23 of Sholebroke Mount, Leeds, employed at a Middlesbrough store; George Albert Hector Philippichalla, 33, a Singhalese, employed as a draughtsman by Dorman Long and Company Ltd and Charles Henry Caywood 33 of Aylesham Avenue Streatham Hill London.

Goldstone and Caywood were well enough to leave the hospital tonight. The two others were stated to be fairly comfortable.

Maid's Discovery

When a maid arrived at the hotel today she was surprised to find the doors locked, but eventually she managed to raise the manageress, Miss Florence Leggett.

Miss Leggett, who also suffered slightly from the effects of gas, said in an interview that she and the maid noticed a smell of gas. She tried to wake Miss Hunter, but could not do so. She then called one of the boarders. He got up but collapsed almost at once. She ran to Mr Robert's room and saw him on the floor. She summoned the police and neighbours.

Corporation officials later examined the gas Pipes and the electricity system.

Death 26 Jun 1950 Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England following the collapse of a hotel balcony.
