Note

At dawn on December 16th 1914, some four months after Britain declared war on Germany, three German warships appeared off the North-East coast of England and began shelling. They attacked several towns: Hartlepool, West Hartlepool, Whitby and Scarborough. More than 100 people were killed, and twice that number were injured. Several British destroyers which were dispatched to intercept the raiders came under fire; two were hit, and four seamen were killed. The raiders returned to Germany.
