History
Lydia Rowntree was born Lydia Potter in Middlesbrough in 1869, the daughter of Edwin Potter, an engineer, and his wife Ann. In December 1897 she married Quaker manufacturer and social reformer, Benjamin Seebohm Rowntree. The couple had five children together; Joseph Seebohm was born in 1898, Mary in 1900, Peter in 1904, Philip in 1907, and Julian in 1911. Between 1923 and 1941 Benjamin Seebohm Rowntree was chairman of Rowntree’s Cocoa Works in York, the business established by his father Joseph.

Although the couple initially lived at the Homestead in Clifton, York, in 1936 they moved to Hughenden, near High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire.

Lydia Rowntree died in Buckinghamshire on 1 September 1944.
