Transcript of Morning Post, 11th September 1861

William Playfoot, a carman in the employee of the South Western Railway Company surrendered to his bail before Alderman Humphrery, charged with causing the death of a boy, name unknown.

Richard Loughborough, police constable 284, said-- Yesterday evening he was on duty in Barbican, about 20 minutes to 5, when there was an obstruction. When it was removed the defendant, who was driving a van with two horses abreast belonging to the South Western Railway, move his van to go on. Suddenly witness heard a cry, and on looking around he saw a boy drop from the wheel of defendant's van. It appears that the felloes of the wheel had caught the head of the unfortunate boy between it and the post, and crushed it. The boy was conveyed to St. Bartholomew's Hospital where he died.

The prisoner was reminded till Saturday, to enable the coroner to hold and inquest, but was admitted to bail in two sureties of 20 shillings each.
