It seems a long time ago now, but I just came across these photographs.
It all seems a very long time ago now, but we had arranged to fly to Nagoya, intending to stay with Alice’s university friend Chino. However she had secured a new job in Paris a week or two before we were due to travel. On arriving in Nagoya we left immediately for Kyoto, where we had arranged to stay in a ryokan, or family inn, before travelling to Tokyo for the International Puzzle Party. These pictures are from Kyoto.
Kyoto was a very green and pleasant city, bowl-shaped surrounded by wooded hills that were full of pagodas and shrines. We were within walking distance of the eastern edge of the city. Our rooms looked out onto a rather dry river, where we regularly saw herons.
All our wonderful meals were served with great elegance in our rooms, by two wondereful ladies who spoke no English. We will return to Japan one day. Kyoto was much nicer than Tokyo, which was very busy, and neon-lit, like 14 square miles of Picadilly Circus.
